Blackheads, also known as open comedones, are follicles that have a wider than normal opening. They are filled with plugs of sebum and sloughed-off cells and have undergone a chemical reaction resulting in the oxidation of melanin. This gives the material in the follicle the typical black color.

Most people trying to find out how to get rid of blackheads end up at a dead end. They buy some special formula that doesn’t work or use a blackhead extractor that ends up doing more damage to the skin and just makes the problem worse. Don’t lose hope. There is a solution.

Here are some tips to get rid of blackheads

1. Keep the skin as clean and oil free as possible. Use natural or chemically prepared cleansers, astringent solutions or masks to accomplish this. Avoid harsh soaps that may irritate the skin or any creams that leave an oily finish.

2. Not changing pillow case or towel is something people ignore but this can be one of the major reasons why people including your very self is suffering from blackheads right now. Pillow case and towels, when not regularly changed become the breeding ground for Blackheads causing bacteria and gems and that’s why we have so many acne sufferers these days than ever before.

3. Try to avoid eating junk foods, although it is not yet medically proved that some types of food will cause acne or blackheads but it is proved that certain foods increase the probability of getting acne and blackheads. There is no hard and fast rule about what you should eat but it if you stay away from the junk food and eat a healthy diet you’ll be less prone to blackheads.

4. Do not over wash your face. Some people are under the impression that the more they wash, the better chance they have of getting rid of blackheads. This is just a myth. Washing your face with soap one or two times a day is plenty.

5. Don’t over expose your skin to the sun. While it may appear that a nice tan makes your blackheads go away in reality it only makes them less visible. The risks of over exposure to the sun, rapid skin aging and skin cancer, far outweigh any benefit a tan will have for your condition.

6. Before you go to bed for the night be sure you remove all of your makeup. If you suffer from oily skin then be sure to avoid cosmetics that have a lot of oil. If you already have blackheads that you want to get rid of then you should steam your face to open the pores on your face. This will make it easier to remove blackheads.

7.  Steaming – If you want a good method of deep cleaning the pores, you should try steaming. The steam helps to open up the pores and allow you to remove dead skin cells, oils, blackheads. You can do this 2 times a week. Here’s how you do it. Boil a pot of water. You can also add herbs such as rosemary, peppermint, lemon, or chamomile. Allow to water to cool down a bit to avoid burning your skin. Drape a towel over your head to prevent the steam from escaping and put your face directly above the steam. Do this for 10-15 minutes and then rinse your face with lukewarm water.
